Only a few years back, I was in a middle school art-class learning how to make paper-Mache masks with Jason Rosen, a teacher legitimately psyched to create these character faces with a crew of us smelly kids. Mr. Rosen was one of those teachers that middle school kids loved to hang out with because he knew about all the good music and movies that were out at the time – he seemed like he could hang out with our crew of friends and teach us something about being a cool adult.
It’s a nice life style to be able to wake up everyday and create art from your imagination - just like when you were a kid. Most people go through life loosing sight of what they truly care about because “life,” (money) gets in the way – not Jason. Go figure that 10 years later, Jason and myself meet up to collaborate on a project combining both the mediums of our life-long creations.
Mr. Rosen, now Jason, has taken his passion for badass movie and comic book characters and created a truly inspiring story that both children, and adults can enjoy. Jason’s creation – Monsterwood, is an old school mythic story comparable to Lord of The Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia, but with a more a pop culture/movie/comic book feel. It’s hard to pull this off in our age of over-stimulated, Youtube eyes, but Jason has created characters and a story that will both intrigue and capture you - most likely because it’s truly an original idea, not some Hollywood garbage spawned off product placement and Justin Biber fans.
Just in time for the holidays and his upcoming release of Monsterwood to the world, Jason approached me with the idea of doing a collaborative t-shirt with Emulsion. I was hesitant to put a comic-book character on a tee shirt, mainly due to the fact that our target demographic with apparel is the skateboard community, but when I found out that the illustration was a collaboration between himself and Steve Ellis, I couldn’t say no. Steve is best known for co-Creating High Moon, as part of D.C. Comic’s initial Zuda’s online comic launch in October 2007. In November 2007, High Moon was awarded a contract with DC Comics, where the strip was serialized on Zuda.com. In two years time, High Moon had over two million readers. High Moon was nominated for two 2009 Harvey Awards, for Best New Series and Best Online Work, winning the latter award. High Moon was nominated again for another 2010 Harvey Award for Best Online Work, and Steve himself was nominated for Best Inker, alongside comic legend, Klaus Janson. Impressive right? What skateboarder hasn’t read a comic book and dabbled with that style of illustration?
We decided to give it a go and are very proud to present to you a limited edition, Emulsion Apparel t-shirt created by Jason Rosen, illustrated by Steve Ellis, and screen printed by hand, by us folks here at Emulsion. Pre-orders begin… Now:
